Merry Mandala Monday #11

Hi there, most welcome to the 11th edition of the Merry Mandala Monday!

One day my son, who was then 6 years old, talked about "a sea of wonders". I thought that was such a poetic expression, that I promised him to draw a mandala about that. A few shells from our collection were my 'models', because I sure can't do that by heart, now way! The seahorses are somewhat based on a black and white photograph from the animal encyclopedia... Nevertheless, they have really become 'my' horses! The starfish even arose without an example, I've caught a lot of them in my childhood ;-) I think, the rim with the chasing little fishes is funny. The extra rim with the wavy water frames it all beautifully. What do you think?

A Sea of Wonders
(2003/02/25)

Merry Mandala Monday #10

Hello there, welcome to the 10th Merry Mandala Monday!
Apologies for skipping last Monday's blog post, but we were having a nice holiday on the Spanish island Lanzarote :-)

Well, don't you agree, this mandala is peculiar?? Like I wrote before, I like to experiment with materials, etc. This time I was playing with my so-called Burmester set or French curves. On a grid of auxiliary cirkels and lines I draw several overlapping shapes, The spirals arose during the coloring and eventually they became a kind of snail shells.

And again it was much later, when I realised that my husband and I were thinking about moving into another house... That (still) didn't happen!

Have another creative week!

To move, or not to move?
(2003/02/20)

Merry Mandala Monday #9

Hello there, here is the next Merry Mandala Monday post!

It was such a pleasure to work on this mandala! Drawing lines with the ruler to connect the eight dots on the circle, to double them... Creating the border with this sort of Greek pattern. It's not closed, but you have to zigzag to come in or go out. I guess, it means I needed some protection at that moment, but I remained open to impressions from outside and for sharing feelings and/or emotions. Funny to realize that, because I actually don't care about interpretations that much! The stars were created during the coloring to make it more interesting.
When it was ready, this mandala somehow reminded me of magicians. The wonderful song "(It's) A Kind of Magic" by Queen popped up in my head. From that same day it is de title of this mandala to honour the legendary Freddie Mercury!

A Kind of Magic... (2003/02/18)

Onmiddellijk schoot de prachtige song "(It's) A Kind of Magic" van Queen me te binnen.

Merry Mandala Monday #8

Hello there, it's a Merry Mandala Monday again!

This one is called: "Red Flower with Green Leaves". What a dull, uninspired name... I have to think about something much better than this one!! It could be the heart of a poppy or a tulip, but it isn't. Perhaps the colors red and green make you think of Christmas, but it has nothing to do with that either.
The flower just came out after filling the divided circle with shapes. It could have an nice striking color, and thus my favorite red colorpencil from Bruynzeel came in handy again! To finish it off, I thought of the wreath from green leaves. To get those as equally as possible I did a little cheating... I've used a homemade template to accomplish that ;-)

Red Flower with Green Leaves (2003/02/16)

Merry Mandala Monday #7

Hi there, today again a short story!

In fact, there's no particular story to tell about this one! It's a tradional lotus mandala that we learned at the course. Not so very complicated, just following the instructions. The color advice for the lotus was pink. I didn't feel for pale pink, so I used a more intense pink. The green leaves and the illusion of water form the soft border of the mandala.
Drawing all those leaves was fun, and by coloring them I was able to practice the shading technique.

Have a creative week!

My Lotus (2003/02/14)

Merry Mandala Monday #6

Hi there, the mandala story of last week continues!

The next day I decided to do another one (with the same materials of course), because I found mandala #5 too 'messy'. I deliberately wanted to give this mandala a relaxed look by drawing less different patterns. What I liked about the first one, I've repeated in the second! I was very content about the small mandala in the large mandala, so it was allowed to come back.
The final result made me very happy, with the curvy lines and the mosaic shapes filling the spaces between them. I especially like the look of the small mandala!

Have a creative week!

Calmcalmcalm... (2003/02/09)

Merry Mandala Monday #5

Hi there, here's my mandala story again!

Now we are really dealing with 'Zentangle avant la lettre'...
Sometimes I create a mandala because I want to try out certain materials. In this case it was a cheap set of metallic gel pens, I had just purchased. So pretty on a black sheet of paper!
The patterns arose quite naturally and they are a good match with the pens! Such a funny thought: it's the year 2003 and in that same year Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts developed their Zentangle method!
Do you recognize Echoism, Eek, Scoodle, (a kind of) Static, Tidal and Triangles? There's also something like Droplets, Hypnotic and Shattuck. And now I'm giving it another closer look, I see a very simple Tripoli too!
As for me, this mandala looks pretty restless. I presume I was quite busy with everything at that time, so its name suits well.
To be continued next Monday!

Have a creative week!

Busybusybusy!! (2003/02/08)

Hallo daar, hier is mijn mandalaverhaal weer!
